a treatise on apples, in boredom
my favorite type of apple (fruit, not computer) for the last, oh, probably about seven years, has been the royal gala. not bitter, but not too sweet, very crisp, just the right amount of juicy--they are the only reason that i can even really say that i like apples. they rock.
i started eating royal galas because i was grocery shopping one night, back when i lived in somerset, at that store that i think was a pathmark. i was standing in front of their enormous (as i remember it) display of different types of apples, lulled into a zen-like produce daze, and this guy was suddenly next to me saying, 'try the royal galas. they're my favorite.' so i did, and ever since, they have been my favorite, too.
true story. really.
when i went to the local produce market on sunday (i try to always buy fruits and vegetables there, as opposed to the grocery store, because
A. their produce is always better than the grocery store, and
B. their produce is so very, very much cheaper than the grocery store, even the fancy stuff like the plum tomatoes and the portabello mushrooms.) and they had no royal galas, which happens sometimes. so i opted for golden delicious, which come in a very, very, very distant maybe second to royal galas, and a couple of fujis. never had them, but i figured, i'll try them. well, i just ate one of them, and i have to say, it's not bad. it's a good deal sweeter than a royal gala, but good and crisp and crunchy. i hate mealy apples. yuck. and, it tasted good with peanut butter, which is my current favorite afternoon snack, an apple and a tablespoon-ish of peanut butter (super chunky, of course). good stuff.
so i'm not saying that i will switch to a new favorite type of apple, but i'm saying that fuji is ok. its sweetness is just a bit too aggressive for me--the royal gala sweetness is much lighter. but i can say that if in a pinch, in the future, i may purchase fujis again.
