When I was a kid, my dad got a Magnavox laser disc player—probably one of the first consumer models, because that’s the kind of guy he was, so I’m guessing it was between 1978 and 1980. We had the disc set of this movie—Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band starring the Bee Gees and Peter Frampton, based on the Beatles’ songs—and I watched it sometimes every day.

Now, I understand that this movie is bad. I know that the Bee Gees’ acting was so atrocious, all their dialogue was edited out. But when I was five, it was magical to me. I loved it so much. And I had such a crush on Peter Frampton, with his silly white overalls and poofy hair.

This morning, while getting ready for work, I turned on the TV and this movie was on HBO. Watching it for a while, I got a little teary remembering how much unadulterated joy it had brought me as a child. Thankfully, HBO is showing it again—right now, actually—and my DVD recorder is on it. I can’t wait to get home tonight to watch it.
