In the late-ish ’90s I met a young man from Manchester, England, who got me hooked on Britpop—Oasis, the Bluetones, Ocean Colour Scene. Whenever I hear this song, it takes me right back to that moment in my life, and those memories are golden: my first job after college; my first apartment in an old farmhouse; driving through cornfields every day on the way to work in my light-blue, rattletrap ‘85 Chevy Nova. I had good friends, I went out a lot, I wrote a lot. All I remember of that time is sunshine and happiness and hope and life. At least, that’s how I see it now. Don’t we all remember our pasts as better than they were?
